Friedrich Robert Donat (18 Mar 1905 Withington - 9 Jun 1958 London) was an English stage and film actor celebrated for his romantic leading roles in 1930s British cinema. Best known for Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps (1935) and his Oscar-winning turn in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), he also starred in The Count of Monte Cristo and The Citadel. Chronic asthma limited his career to 19 films, but his charm, subtlety, and stage work made him an enduring icon. He is part of the golden age of Hollywood and the silver screen series of photographs.
