Hasui Kawase
Hasui Kawase was a Japanese shin-hanga woodblock printmaker celebrated for poetic landscapes blending traditional ukiyo-e techniques with Western-style realism. Over a 40-year career, he created more than 600 prints—often depicting serene, lesser-known locales in snow, rain, and moonlight—and became the first print artist named a Living National Treasure. His works, exported widely, influenced global appreciation of modern Japanese art.
