Laurence Kerr Olivier (22 May 1907 Dorking - 11 Jul 1989 West Sussex), Baron Olivier, was an English actor and director acclaimed as one of the greatest performers of the 20th century. A master of Shakespeare on stage and screen, he starred in and directed classics like Henry V (1944), Hamlet (1948, winning Best Picture and Best Actor Oscars), and Richard III (1955). Founding director of Britain’s National Theatre, he earned four Academy Awards, five BAFTAs, five Emmys, and four Golden Globes, and is commemorated by the Olivier Awards. He is part of the golden age of Hollywood and the silver screen series of photographs.
