Mary Jane “Mae” West (17 Aug 1893 Brooklyn - 22 Nov 1980 Los Angeles) was an American actress, singer, comedian, screenwriter, and playwright whose seven-decade career spanned vaudeville, Broadway, radio, film, and music. Famous for her witty double entendres and portrayal of sexually confident women, she challenged censorship, became a top box-office draw in the 1930s, and was ranked 15th on AFI’s greatest female screen legends list. She remained a pop culture icon featured in artworks by Salvador Dalí, Willem de Kooning, and Diane Arbus. She is part of the golden age of Hollywood and the silver screen series of photographs.
