L.S Lowry is recognised for his portrayals of busy industrial scenes filled with colourful stylised figures often referred to as 'matchstick men'. In 'Coming From The Mill' Lowry has depicted mill workers walking home after a long shift at work. Lowry took inspiration from buildings and industrial centres he had seen near his home town of Pendlebury in Lancashire to imagine the factory in this painting.
