L.S Lowry is recognised for his portrayals of busy industrial scenes filled with colourful stylised figures often referred to as 'matchstick men'. However, later on in his career Lowry turned his attention towards groups of individuals with little or no architectural landscape. In this painting Lowry has depicted a more intimate scene - a fight he witnessed outside a lodging house in Manchester.
