L.S Lowry is recognised for his portrayals of busy industrial scenes filled with colourful stylised figures often referred to as 'matchstick men'. 'Going to work' was painted in watercolour by L.S Lowry in 1959. In this painting Lowry has depicted a swarm of workers walking towards the factory gates against a landscape of industrial buildings.
