John Edward “Jack” Hawkins (14 Sep 1910 (Wood Green - 18 Jul 1973 Chelsea) was an English stage and film actor famed for his commanding presence and portrayals of military and authority figures. A major British star of the 1950s, he earned multiple BAFTA nominations and is remembered for roles in classics like The Cruel Sea, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, and Zulu. After losing his voice to throat cancer in 1966, he continued acting with dubbing until his death in 1973. He is part of the golden age of Hollywood and the silver screen series of photographs.
