Utamaro Kitagawa (1753-1806) was born in Edo (Tokyo) and is considered the leading Japanese printmaker and painter of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and ‘bijin-ga’, art depicting beautiful women. Kitagawa took his models from the street or from the pleasure-district Yoshiwara. The stories of his love affairs with the ladies of the 'licensed quarters' are said to be abundant.
