Modern artist Jackson Pollock was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Pollock was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface. Pollock produced ‘Shimmering Substance’ in 1946. With no hint of figuration, the painting is one of Pollock’s first completely non-representational artworks. Pollock squeezed the paint directly from the tube onto the canvas and manipulated it with a palette knife to create the loops that swirl at the edges.
