Modern artist Jackson Pollock was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Pollock was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface. In 1948 he produced ‘Number 14: Gray’, a striking example of this technique as he dripped black enamel paint onto the surface of wet gesso. This meant that the paint bled into the chalky white background, creating a silver-grey halo around the black lines.
