Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Henri Matisse’s originally created this work in 1944 for his renowned artist book 'Pasiphaé: Chant de Minos (Les Crétois)', a retelling of the ancient Greek myth. Inspired by Greek black-figure vase painting, Matisse used a linocut technique to create solid black forms that contrast wonderfully against delicate white lines.
