Wassily Kandinsky painted ‘Lake Starnberg’ in 1908. At this point in his career he was gradually stripping away representational images and using vibrant colours to provoke an emotional response with his viewers. This work was inspired by the landscape and folk art of Southern Bravaria. Lake Stanberg was closed to Munich, where Kandinsky had lived since 1896.
