‘Old Church and Steps’ was painted by L.S Lowry in 1960 when he was asked by photographer Robert Smithies to paint a picture of Middleton, a city in Greater Manchester. Together the artists walked around the city looking for a special scene for Lowry to paint and the artist settled on the steps that lead up to the old Methodist Church.
