In 1950 L.S Lowry was commissioned by the British politician and diplomat Sir Geoffrey de Freitas to paint a view of the city of Lincoln and asked for the cathedral to be included in the composition. Rather than depicting a view from the city centre Lowry focused on the canal and its tow path. Lowry made several sketches of the banks of the canal at twilight, when the factory workers were going home. In the finished painting, the cathedral can be spotted in the background above the canal and terraced houses.
