Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. As with a number of cut-outs, Mimosa was a maquette for work in a different medium, in this case, a rug. The swirling yellow, blue, and white shapes dance over a quartered background of shaded reds from peach to brick.
