Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. The Sheaf is one of Matisse's later cut-outs. It is a large-scale work of coloured frond shapes on a white background. The Sheaf was a maquette for a ceramic work of the same name commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney F. Brody in the early 1950s for the courtyard of their home.
