Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. The model in ‘Danseuse dans le fauteuil, sol en damier’ is the dancer Carla Avogardo, the sister of Henri Matisse’s long serving model Michaele. For the present work Matisse presents Carla reclining on an armchair looking at the viewer wearing a blue dress which contrasts with her short auburn hair. Carla has also been situated against the chequered floor of the Hotel Regina in Nice, where Matisse was living and working at the time, reflecting his fascination with highly decorative interior of the hotel.
