Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. From 1917 onwards Henri Matisse spent most of his winters in the city of Nice located in the South of France. Matisse often stayed at the Hôtel Mediterranée, a Rococo-style building that he used as the backdrop for many of his paintings. For this painting, Matisse has depicted a woman who is thought to be his mistress and Russian model Lydia Delectorskaya seated in front of one of the many French style shuttered windows at the hotel.
