Mark Rothko was a Latvian-born American abstract painter and was associated with the American abstract expressionism movement of modern art. Rothko produced ‘White Cloud over Purple’ in 1955 a large orange canvas with three blocks of colour painted horizontally onto the surface. This artwork was part of his multiform series which signified his transition toward his more mature abstract style.
