‘Blitzed Site’ is an oil painting produced by L.S Lowry in 1942. During the Second World War Lowry worked as a fire watcher in Manchester and was usually stationed on the roof of a city centre department store. He recalled being the ‘first down in the morning to sketch the blitzed buildings before the smoke and grime had cleared’. An X-Ray examination of the picture revealed that it was painted over one of Lowry’s earlier art school studies.
