Jean- Michel Basquiat experienced racial injustices throughout his life. Basquiat chose to express this duality of his identity in his 1984 'Self Portrait'. Basquiat achieved this through his use of colour, depicting a black figure against a white background and contrasted blocks of vivid red paint with brushstrokes of cool blue undertones.
