Jean-Michel Basquiat often included black figures at the centre of his artworks as he wanted to draw attention to the black that was rarely represented in art. However, the totalitarian figure in 'Irony of a Policeman' represents Basquiat's opinion that it was ironic for African Americans to be part of the police force.
