Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Verve was an arts magazine published by Tériade, who also commissioned Jazz. In the earliest cover shown here, for Verve's issue in 1937, two black figures dance energetically on a green background with white stars. The letters of "VERVE" appear as scattered letters "VE" and "R" in orange on purple.
