Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. In 1912 and 1913 Henri Matisse visited Tangiers in Morocco and became interested in Islamic Art. ‘Window at Tangier’ is the first part of the Moroccan triptych Matisse created whilst staying in Tangier.
