Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. The Egyptian curtain in this painting was owned by Matisse, and the applique patterns are said to have partly inspired his cut paper collages. Matisse often painted window scenes as he greatly enjoyed the combination of indoor and outdoor views.
